It's well known that the history-making Alinghi team, under the colours of the Swiss yacht club, challenged for and won the ultra-prestigious America's Cup on its first attempt in Aukland, 2003. And it's fairly well known that Audemars Piguet, one of the real giants of Swiss watchmaking, sponsored the team that year and in 2007, releasing limited edition watches each time. What's less well known is that AP's association with Swiss America's Cup teams actually dates to the previous Aukland event, in 2000. The watch for sale here is the first of the City of Sails limited editions, released in just 300 pieces in honour of the Be Happy team, which was sadly not successful in its attempt to reach the Cup final. Nevertheless, Be Happy was used as the foundation of Alinghi's extraordinary work three years later, and it is fondly remembered by AP fans thanks to this marvellous and highly collectible Royal Oak, with its lightweight titanium case and blue dial.
